Creator's Collective was looking for submissions for their 2020 theme: Odyssey. After researching about the meaning behind the word,

"Odyssey: a long series of wanderings or adventures, especially when filled with notable experiences, hardships, etc."    dictionary.com

I moved into sketching and decided to work with a unique medium: pixels.

STAGE 01
Brainstorming

My source of inspiration came from these youtube videos of an artist's pixel work named wanella whom I came across online.

Beyond the artist inspiration, I had also drawn with pixels in the past with things such as pictochat and animal crossing games and was curious what it would be like to work with the medium again!

Learning via the internet

Having never created pixel art without a preset, I needed to learn how to setup a base for creating such a piece. So I turned to online tutorials, specifically youtube; there I found a video on how to create pixel art on adobe illustrator.

Then I moved into my good old friend, adobe illustrator, where I followed steps and customized the grid to lay down the base for the pixel art.

But, I still needed a colour palette.

STAGE 03
Creation Process

Colours, colours and more colours

After many tries, I was having zero luck trying to come up with a colour palette just straight from my brain so I decided to sample colours from images I liked.

After sampling I pulled a couple swatches into my illustrator file and began laying down colours.

colour sampling

Using the base file I made from the youtube tutorial, I decided to start with creating a simple scene of mountains and seeing where it took me.

Why did I choose mountains?  When thinking about a journey the first image that popped into my head was went hiking on two mountains. One being the mountains in British Columbia and another being Yangmingsan in Taiwan.

Buliding the Pieces

Yangminsan, Taiwan Mountain Hike on a foggy day

And thus, the first piece was complete! However, it felt as though one piece was not enough, so I looked around for more inspiration... and was really inspired by the colour of a hand mirror I owned.

So I incorporated it in my second piece!

I followed a similar process with the first piece, laying down the mid-tones and building shadows and highlights overtime.

some final thoughts
Takeaways

• Never worked with pixel art, was definitely a challenge but a worthwhile one!
• Had to think with previous art experience but apply it within the limits of each pixel
• Definitely a different art style and would want to try it again in the future
• Overall was a fun process and prompted me to gain more motivation towards creating more personal projects!
